REAL ESTATE BROKER LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Real Estate Brokers are licensed by the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) to represent the public in the purchase, sale, or lease of real property, or a business opportunity, for compensation.

In order to get a Broker license you must pass the DRE-administered Broker State Exam. In order to qualify for the Broker State Exam, you must have either two years of full-time experience as a Salesperson within the last 5 years, or a 4-year degree (major or minor) in Real Estate. Additionally, you must complete a total of eight courses. (Real Estate Trainers offers the bold-typed courses.)

Required:
  • Real Estate Practice
  • Legal Aspects of Real Estate
  • Real Estate Finance
  • Real Estate Appraisal
  • Either Real Estate Economics or Accounting*

Plus, any three of the following electives:
  • Property Management
  • Escrow and Title
  • Real Estate Principles
  • Real Estate Office Administration
  • Business Law
  • Mortgage Loan Brokering & Lending
  • Adv. Legal Aspects of Real Estate
  • Adv. Real Estate Finance
  • Adv. Real Estate Appraisal
  • Common Interest Developments
  • Computer Applications in Real Estate

In many cases students have already completed several courses during the Salesperson pre-license education, or in college.

Exceptions
  1. *If you completed both Real Estate Economics, and Accounting, then you only need to complete two elective courses.
  2. Members of the California State Bar are exempt from the course requirements, but must meet the 2 years of experience or a 4-year college degree with a major or minor in real estate.

Once you complete the pre-license requirements, you can apply for the Broker State Exam. It can take up to six weeks for the DRE to process your application.
